Event: Betty Makoni Visits Villanova
Location: Villanova University, Connelly Center Cinema
Details: GCNW founder and 2009 CNN Hero Betty Makoni, the woman who started it all, will be visiting Villanova on Wednesday, April 7, 2010! She will personally meet the members of GCNova, followed by a public presentation from 6:30-7:30pm addressing issues of child and sexual violence in Africa and abroad, what GCNW is doing to help, and how students can get involved with global advocacy efforts to confront human rights violations. This event is has been approved for Villanova ACS co-curricular credit. Take an hour out of your week to meet this beautiful woman, she has a story to share with you!

Event: Take Back the Night Candlelit Vigil
Location: Villanova South and Main Campuses
Details: Villanova students are invited to join members of GCNova as we ‘take back the night,’ reclaiming a woman’s right to walk alone, at night, and feel safe! We will begin our short candlelit walk on Villanova’s South Campus, through the Memorial Park trail, and end on the steps of the St. Thomas of Villanova Church where GCNova Executive Board members will read a few stories of young sexual assault victims. The walk will begin at 9:30pm on the South Campus grassy knoll.

Event: 16 Days for Women’s Rights
Location: Villanova University
Details: When Villanova returns from its Thanksgiving holiday, GCNova will be recognizing 16 Days for Women’s Rights with a full schedule of activities and fundraisers.
- In a collaboration with the Chi Eta Phi nursing sorority of Villanova, GCNova will be selling Secret Santa gift bags in Connelly Center from 11am-3pm on Monday, November 30-Thursday, December 3 for $5 (Wildcard will be accepted). Send an anonymous end-of-semester gift to a friend or loved one on campus! And, a few of the bags will be stuffed with extra surprises, including movie theatre and restaurant gift cards! Secret Santa bags will be delivered during the week of December 7. Proceeds will be split between Chi Eta Phi and Girl Child Network Worldwide.
- The Villanova Martial Arts club will be hosting a self-defense class, open to all students, on Wednesday, December 2 from 7-830pm in the Alumni Gym. Cash donations will be accepted, but not required.
- GCNova will be hosting a bake sale in Connelly Center from 11am-2pm on Monday, December 7 and Tuesday, December 8. Stop by for a snack and learn more about our organization and how you can help survivors of sexual assault. Minimum $1 donations required, and Wildcard will be accepted. All proceeds will directly benefit Girl Child Network Worldwide.
- GCNova will be hosting Women Against Abuse of Philadelphia, who will be presenting an informative, interactive workshop concerning the warning signs of unhealthy relationships, as well as how to help yourself and those around you who may be in dangerous situations. Join us in Driscoll 240, 4-5pm on Tuesday, December 8!
- On December 9, GCNova is proud to host award-winning, world-renowned photographer Linda Panetta of Optical Realities. Linda will be presenting her photos and speaking to students about her experiences with women and children at risk around the world. Join us in Driscoll 134 from 6-8pm! THIS PRESENTATION HAS BEEN APPROVED AS AN ACS CO-CURRICULAR EVENT!***
- On December 10, which officially ends 16 Days for Women’s Rights and is internationally recognized as Human Rights Day, GCNova is collaborating with various other campus organizations (including Villanova POWER, Amendment One, Amnesty International, STAND, Phi Sigma Pi, Fair Food, and VUAD) for a major awareness event. Throughout the day, students will be ‘rocking their rights’ by wearing hand-decorated and designed t-shirts, promoting their respective organizations and their “favorite” individual rights, including education, free speech, health, equality, expression, etc.

Event: CNN All-Star Heroes Tribute Gala
Location: Kodak Theatre, Los Angeles, CA
Details: On invitation by GCNW, Jessica Lu will be traveling to Los Angeles, CA to attend the CNN All-Star Heroes Tribute Gala celebration, honoring CNN’s Top 10 Heroes of the Year! Betty Makoni, GCNW co-founder and president, is among the incredible Top 10 and is nominated for CNN Hero of the Year. You can vote for Betty until November 19, 2009. The winner will be announced at the gala event, which will be televised on Thanksgiving night, at 9pm ET on CNN. Keep an eye out for photos and a full-blown account of the trip upon Jessica’s return!
