precious.

The movie Precious, based on Sapphire’s novel Push, was recently released into theaters and it deals with a myriad of women’s issues plaguing the film’s protagonist, Precious.  Precious is an illiterate teenager in Harlem who is pregnant with her second child by her father. The abuse does not stop with her father–her mother also sexually and physically abuses Precious. She has to face many issues that are of great concern to us here at GCNova.

The film chronicles Precious as she embarks upon a journey to turn her life around–to stop the abuse and the lack of education.   A radical teacher takes Precious under her wing and soon, Precious makes great strides in reading, writing, and well, her life. She becomes a strong, young women who is able to stand up to her abusive parents and regain what is left of her tattered life. Although the subject matter of the film involves incest, violence, and abuse, it is a beautiful story and by the end, you will witness the complete rebirth of Precious.  I just finished Push and I highly recommend it.  Precious is a role model for women everywhere and I admire her never-ending courage to change, passion for a better life, and strength to continue even in the darkest of days.
