As for GCNova, we have taken a bit of a break since the spring semester’s successful Take Back the Night event. The final weeks of the semester were dominated by final exams and move-out. Two among us walked at the commencement ceremonies: congratulations to our 2010 graduates, GCNova Vice President Maren Miller and GCNova Villanova Outreach Chair Sarah Czar!

Summer 2010 will bring changes and plans for the future of GCNova, including a fall transition in leadership as we begin to look ahead to the coming years. Stay tuned!

Last week, GCNW founder and 2009 CNN Hero Betty Makoni visited Villanova University with Philadelphia activist Ben Escobar, of BE Associates. On Wednesday, April 7, she brought beauty, grace, and inspiration to our campus, and all who were lucky enough to be in attendance were incredibly moved. Our beloved Betty told her story, as well as the stories of her GCN girls, and we were blown away by her eloquence and genuine nature. For me, it was my second time being with Betty, and I was incredibly proud to introduce her to our GCNova team and Villanova’s students. Even more amazing, Betty was just as proud of us and what we have accomplished so far as a team here in Pennsylvania.

Still feeling the inspiration that Betty left us with last week, GCNova took further steps last night to break through the barrier of silence on college campuses.

On Monday, April 12, 2010, GCNova led our very first Take Back the Night event. Arranged by GCNova Vice President Maren Miller, the candlelit walk and vigil began on South Campus, where a group of about 30 students gathered to honor and remember victims and survivors of sexual abuse. With candles in hand, we walked from South Campus, through Memorial Park, and up the path towards St. Thomas of Villanova Church. When we arrived at the steps of the church, we were treated to a dating violence skit performed by students of this semester’s Philosophy of Women course. Finally, three GCNova members read the memoirs of three survivors of sexual assault.

After the event, one Villanova student volunteered to lead a prayer circle for all victims and survivors of abuse.

It was an incredible, touching, emotional event. For all of those who have been afraid to speak up about abuse, for those who have been courageous enough to stand up and be a voice against assault, and for women and children throughout the world who must fear walking alone after dark… Villanova took back the night.

Ten years ago, in Zimbabwe, an extraordinary woman began her life’s work for young women and children all around the world. Betty Makoni, founder of GCN Zimbabwe and GCNW, shared her incredible story with CNN and, in two days, will be sharing it with Villanova University. GCNova, the Center for Peace and Justice Education, and the Villanova Department of Communication is immensely proud to welcome Makoni — a recognized 2009 CNN Hero — to Villanova as she addresses child and sexual violence in Africa and abroad, what GCNW is doing to help, and how students can join the fight against human rights violations around the world.

Whatever your preconceived notions are about assault, “feminism,” or gender issues, put them aside for an hour on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 and come out to hear this amazing, beautiful woman.

This article sheds great light on the aftermath that rape victims often experience. Particularly on college campuses, rape is a hidden dark figure of crime which happens all-too-often, but is rarely addressed. The article discusses the flaws that exist within University disciplinary systems, the institutions’ inabilities to protect their students, and the self-interest Universities can have in attempts to sweep rapes quietly under the rug. Because acquaintance rape is a very real occurrence, this article helps to highlight what a victim must go through and how little understanding there actually is of this horrible act. CNN article

In our nation’s capital, D.C. officials are taking an unorthodox yet necessary step towards preventing the spread of HIV. Here, the HIV infection rate is 6 times higher than the national average which demonstrates the urgency for a new approach in preventative measures. D.C. officials will be handing out 500,000 female condoms in community centers and salons around the city and giving demonstrations on how to use the relatively unknown device. In D.C., 30% of those infected with the virus are women. Through the use of the female condom, officials hope that these women will learn how to protect themselves. The female condom tends to be more expensive which explains its minimal popularity and obscurity in comparison to the ultra common male condom. New versions of the female condom, such as FC2, are significantly less expensive than its predecessors.

It is refreshing to see such a proactive measure geared entirely at the health of women taken by our capital. Through the distribution of female condoms, women in D.C. will have a choice when a man decides a condom is unnecessary. By taking control of their sex life, women are taking control of their health. HIV is a virus that can be easily preventable through the use of condoms, both male & female. It’s a matter of life and death so why take the chance? [via CNN]

It seemed like, last semester, things flew by because we were preoccupied first with getting GCNova organized, then with getting our first fundraising drive underway. Now, after taking a much-needed break in January, it seems as though February lasted about five minutes! It’s March, and Villanova will officially be back from spring break on Monday, March 8.

Which means, it’s about time GCNova gets back in action.

The spring semester has been, and will continue to be, focused on awareness. On February 27, Villanova University held its sixth-annual Love the Skin You’re In fashion show, which promotes healthy body images and self-esteem among young adults. With the help of GCNova member Alana Cerrone, an intern with the Office of Health Promotion, the fifth segment had a cultural focus on traditional African clothing. As the models walked the runway, the emcee spoke of GCN in Zimbabwe, GCNW, and Betty Makoni, encouraging Villanova’s students to remember that the fight for self-esteem and health body image becomes even more difficult in other parts of the world, for young women and children who are also fighting against sexual, child, and domestic violence.

Early next month, GCNW founder Betty Makoni will be visiting Villanova in recognition of National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Arrangements are being made for a screening of Tapestries of Hope, which will hopefully be available for distribution. Stay tuned for more details about April’s events as they become available!

Four bodies-two women and two men-were discovered in a compound in southeast Afghanistan by Afghan and NATO forces. The women found were bound and gagged. As the Afghan and NATO troops approached the compound, they were immediately fired at and a gun battle began, causing many to flee. After the gun battle, the troops searched the compound, finding the bodies. NATO’s International Security Assistant Force(ISAF) and Afghan forces detained 8 men for questioning. A spokesman for the ISAG, Brig. Gen. Eric Tremblay, said in relation to the incident, ”ISAF continually works with our Afghan partners to fight criminals and terrorists who do not care about the life of civilians. The Interior Ministry of Afghanistan has sent a high-ranking delegation today to jointly investigate this incident. We will cooperate fully in this joint investigation and provide any assistance the Interior Ministry requires.”

The bodies have yet to be identified. The cause of death has yet to be determined. Yet it is clear that the ISAF believes that this is the result of deadly terrorists, apathetic to the innocent lives of Afghan civilians. The investigation into this crime is ongoing[via CNN].

Human rights advocate, Aaron Cohen, wants to expose Cambodia’s long existing problem of child sex trafficking in Cambodia, an issue that has been virtually swept under the rug. For years Cohen has been working undercover in the sex trafficking underbelly in order to gain useful information necessary to make arrests of those trafficking women and children. While Cohen’s fight to stop sex trafficking has taken him around the world, he notes that South Asia is one of the worst and most tragic of cases. While there are no official numbers of people being sex trafficked in Cambodia, the number could be as low as 12.3 million while it could be as high as 27 million. No matter what the estimates present, it is safe to say that even on the low end, 12.3 million is way too many. Cambodia has been put on the State Department’s Tier 2 Watch List which means that Cambodia’s government “does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking, but is making an effort to do so.” Cambodia has become a destination for men wishing to have sex with virgin minors.

Cohen’s story is categorized by his relationship with 2 sisters he saved from trafficking in Cambodia, Jonty and Channy Thern. Cohen met them while he was posing undercover in a Cambodian karaoke bar that doubled as a brothel, a common theme in Cambodian life. Cohen gained the information and video he needed by soliciting for sex and then turned that information over to the police so that a raid could take place. That night Cohen saved 12 underage girls. Jonty was just 13 years old. She had been raped and beaten since she began working in the sex trade industry.

Since then, Cohen has seen Jonty and Channy every year. Tragically, Cohen’s most recent visit to Cambodia was marked by Jonty’s funeral. At the tender age of 17, Jonty died from liver failure established over years of drug and alcohol abuse from years of being trafficked. She had been trafficked since the age of 10. Even though Jonty had been saved from the trade 4 years earlier, the lasting effects of child trafficking continued, resulting in her untimely death [via CNN].
